The Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services was originally established by the Prisons Amendment Act 1999. It commenced operations in June 2000. The role of the Office is to bring independent external scrutiny to the standards and operational practices relating to custodial services within the state. The Office, which falls within the general portfolio responsibility of the Minister for Corrective Services, is answerable directly to the Parliament.
