Releasing his Report relating to the 2007 inspection of Broome Regional Prison, the Inspector of Custodial Services Richard Harding welcomed the fact that some tangible improvements had occurred since the last inspection in 2004: "One reason for this is that the uncertainties surrounding the Government's commitment to additional prison accommodation in the Kimberley have now been resolved", he said. A full-service prison is being planned and will be built in the Derby area. West Kimberley prisoners held down south will be able to serve their sentences in their own country – something that is likely to be beneficial from the point of view of successful re-entry into society.
