Roebourne Prison survives a long, hot summer, but questions remain as to its viability

06/05/08
Releasing a Report into an Inspection of Roebourne Prison today, the Inspector of Custodial Services, Professor Richard Harding, stated that the inspection of Roebourne Prison in December 2006 had revealed substantial and imminent risk of regime breakdown. Stress factors included the following: serious overcrowding; consequently, a prisoner mix that was more volatile than normal; oppressive climatic conditions that were about to be exacerbated by the introduction of daylight saving (meaning that lock-up would occur at 5.30 p.m. real time which is still an extremely hot time of the day in the Pilbara); and acute staff shortages that produced burn-out through excessive overtime demands and inevitably led to a reduction of prisoner services.
