Reconciliation Action Plan

13/05/08

Our Vision for Reconciliation
The vision of the Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services (OICS) is that Indigenous people are proportionately represented in the criminal justice system, are treated fairly and with respect and that diversity within the Indigenous population is acknowledged.

Our Business
The Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services is a statutory body that provides a fair and independent prison and juvenile detention centre inspection service. Our Office aims, through direct and indirect means, to improve public confidence in the justice system, reduce re-offending in Western Australia and ensure custodial operations in Western Australia operate with consideration for the rights and well-being of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

Our RAP
As part of the Office's commitment to valuing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their culture and heritage, a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Working Group has been established comprising representatives from all branches. This Group has developed the RAP, will monitor its implementation and ensure it remains relevant and is achieving its objectives. Input will not be exclusive to the Group, which includes Indigenous staff. Indigenous stakeholders will be invited on to the RAP working group within the next year. This work-in-progress belongs to OICS staff that are dedicated to ensuring its progress and will refresh and further develop its content. The outcomes, goals and actions will become a component of the Office's core business, and the Deputy Inspector will have overall responsibility for implementation of the RAP.
